hi doc, i have been experimenting with the old style box filters, with good success. i like being able to pack them with carbon, zeolite, and floss. yeah i change the floss once a week, but it takes just a couple minutes. i leave the carbon and zeolite as it holds the bacteria. i'm not sure how long the carbon and zeolite stays active, the old test was to put a drop of meth blue in the water and see if it clears. if not the carbon is done. i got lee's brand boxes, small and large. i use them in plastic 10-20 gal tubs from walmart, with no substrate, but filled up with plants like guppy grass, christmas moss, and potted swords. i look for sturdy tubs, hefty is good, sterilite is a bit weaker and the sides tend to bow out a bit. but i use both. i currently run 10 tubs loaded with fish that have spawned in my glass tanks. these tubs are so handy, lite, and stackable/storable, and pull one out whenever you need more room or a quarantine tank. no glass to break either, and cheap.

Ummm...you should not be using a canister filter....it is supposed to be an air filter...that is glass skimmer 101....yikes that this is the advice. No wonder you think they don't work.

I'm actually betting on the anoxic filtration that you recommended for this cube to work. My prior experience with aquariums(in the 80's)was with undergravel filtration. In a 30 gallon community tank I had a pair of angelfish that kept spawning but I never tried to rescue any of the fry. That was back before I knew anything about biological filtration. So this time I'm doing schooling fish like neons and corys and live plants and this tank should be great! Thank you Dr. Novak.

i have just completed the first month with the hydrogen peroxide and i would estimate am 80% reduction of all algae in my 37 gallon tank. I was skeptical at first but seeing is believing. no harm to fish or live plant what so ever. I dose manually at the moment which isn't an issue for me but I am interested in the dosing pump for the times I'm away. I highly recommend it's use!

I am getting back into aquariums after 25 years, and I am planning to set up a 750 litre (150cm x 100cm x 50cm) planted tank using an undergravel filter (UGF) system for discus and angels. I want to use a coil heater under the the UGF as my experience with planted tanks in the 80s was very positive using a coil heater. Although I did not use the coil heater with a UGF. My daughter lives in Holland and they use coil heaters under the substrate and achieve amazing plant growth and low maintenance tanks. They never vacuum the substrate and do automatic water changes. The only maintenance they have is cleaning the glass and cutting the plants from time to time. "Under substrate heaters" appear to be a taboo subject these days. From you extensive knowledge and experience what is your opinion on using a coil heater especially under a UGF? Are there any benefits? regards Bill from Australia

Hi Dr Novak, I have a question. I have a 52-gallon tank with just one under gravel filter tube running on a slow air pump. Can I add air stones in the tank for my fish for oxygen? Will it affect anoxic conditions in the tank?

Hello Dr Novak. I have been following your plenum so far and I know it really works. I have bred many fished and all that. My question is if the whiskers and tails cat clay litter is better than walmart's? These days my tanks are cloudy and I wonder if it is because the clay gets smushed as time goes. Are you still using whiskers and tails or any better clay ? Thank you so much.

Hi Dr. Novak i recently setup underground filter with bio media under the filter with cat litter and iron on top of the filter. Is this ok putting bio media under the filter like in one of your other video.

I only have the substrate,plenum, air pump and also the fluval 307. No Sponge filter at all. I don't even clean the Fluval Filter 307 for 5 months. I put BCB bag in the Fluval. Until I had slime Now it still running.

Running two of the 40 gallon breeder stands won't work on the 125 gallon. I'm should work for the six foot span side to side, but the 125 I believe is 24 inches front to bank which is obviously more than the 18 inches for the 40 breeder stands.

Most articles I have read on dosing 3% hydrogen peroxide say to use 1.5 to 2 ml per gallon. Why did you use 3 ml per gallon or 30 ml for 10 gallons? I had a major outbreak of black beard algae and it took over my tank before I discovered using 3% hydrogen peroxide to treat it. The BBA was in all my decorations, plants and the glass and I figured I would give it a shot. I dosed 2 ml per gallon for 2 weeks and the BBA disappeared. I then added Florida Flag Fish to my tank as they eat BBA and it has been over a year and I have not had another outbreak. Every once in a while I see a tuft of BBA, but the Florida Flag Fish eat it before it spreads. Thanks for the great videos. If I had seen your videos a couple of years ago it would have been so helpful.

Hello Dr. Novak, got a question for you. I’ve been watching for a while and appreciate your content. I am about to set up another aquarium and I want to use a plenum (it will be my first one). My question is, will a plenum or slow moving plenum be just as affective or useful in an unplanted aquarium? It will be an African shell dweller set up. Also, would it be just as effective to put safe t sorb or kitty litter in the plenum instead of on the plates under the substrate? Thanks for all the helpful info!

same thing here a ff tank all planted out about 90 g tank feeding every 3 days all i can say is that the fish look very weak, skinny and sick it is more than a huge fail to me for me, more like a big big disappointment.....

so true had my mbuna tank collapse a few months ago the tank was pristine water parameters were good was keeping up with my weekly maintnance and boom they all died in one week 32 fish.....

Can I ask which filter pads you use in the ADA ES2400 (would love amazon link :-)? Also I'm about to order a 385 gallon tank from Custom Aquariums. It will be pretty heavily planted with a medium fish load. Will set up with plenum. Do you think one ES2400 will be sufficient or will I need more? I'm guessing I'll need more, but don't want to spend money unnecessarily. I will be injecting CO2 so I'm trying to stay away from a sump due to the off gassing.

Hi! Just discovered your channel! Love it :) I ve had goldfish for years and some ponds. I bought a 60 gal breeder tank with glasstops. A year old now, Fluval 407, 1 sponge filter, 2 aeration stones for 4 small fancy goldfish around 2-3 inches. I have pothos and philo growing wildly, no other plants. Specs are A+, change water every 1-2 weeks… my tap water PH 7.0 but I have one problem… my tank’s Ph hover always around 6-6.4 and sometimes below 6 😱cannot get it up😢 I have 5 other tanks Ph always good around 6.8-7.2. Can you help?
